Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spinethat spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Morning swooners!

This week pre-publication "can't wait to read" selection is:

Expected Release Date: June 12, 2014

Synopsis:
Forgive us, Father, for we have sinned

Brooklyn Stevens sits in a pool of her own blood, tied up and gagged. No one outside of these dank basement walls knows she’s here. No one can hear her scream.

Sofia Flores knows she shouldn’t have gotten involved. When she befriended Riley, Grace, and Alexis on her first day at school, she admired them, with their perfect hair and their good-girl ways. They said they wanted to save Brooklyn. They wanted to help her. Sofia didn’t realize they believed Brooklyn was possessed.

Now, Riley and the girls are performing an exorcism on Brooklyn—but their idea of an exorcism is closer to torture than salvation. All Sofia wants is to get out of this house. But there is no way out. Sofia can’t go against the other girls . . . unless she wants to be next. . . .

In this chilling debut, Danielle Vega delivers blood-curdling suspense and terror on every page. By the shockingly twisted end, readers will be faced with the most haunting question of all: Is there evil in all of us?

Does this sound creepy or what? This sounds super scary and creepy and OMG I need this book already.

What are you "Waiting on?"

Quotes (#56)

Morning Lovelies,

I hope everyone had a good weekend. I was off visiting the boyfriend and, like always, it's just horrible coming home and not knowing when I'll see him again. Long distance relationship are hard, ugh. Anyways, I need some cheering up so today's quotes will include all sorts of swoony stuff from some of my favorite swoony boys.

"If you stay, I'll do whatever you want. I'll quit the band, go with you to New York. But it you need me to go away, I'll do that, too. I was talking to Liz and she said maybe coming back to your old life would be too painful, that maybe it'd be easier for you to erase us. And that would suck, but I'd do it. I can lose you like that if I don't lose you today. I'll let you go. If you stay." - Gayle Forman, If I Stay

"So do you believe in second chances? I bite my lip.
:Second, third, fourth. Whatever it takes. However long it takes. If the person is right," he adds.
"If the person is...Lola?"
This time, he holds my gaze. "Only if the other person is Cricket." - Stephanie Perkins, Lola and the Boy Next Door

He whispers, "You have no idea how much I've thought about you. How many times I've dreamt" -he takes a tight breath- "how many times I've dreamt about being this close to you." He moves to run a hand through his hair before he changes his mind. Looks down. Looks up. "God, Juliette, I'd follow you anywhere. You're the only good thing left in this world." - Tahereh Mafi, Shatter Me

"And when her lips met mine, I knew that I could live to be a hundred and visit every country in the world, but nothing would ever compare to that single moment when I first kissed the girl of my dreams and knew that my love would last forever." - Nicholas Sparks, Dear John

"I might be in love you with you." He smiles a little. "I'm waiting until I'm sure to tell you, though." - Veronica Roth, Divergent

"I love you enough to never make you choose." - Katie McGarry, Pushing the Limits

"In vain have I struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you." - Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice

"I want to be the friend you fall hopelessly in love with. The one you take into your arms and into you bed and into the private world you keep trapped in your head. I want to be that kind of friend. The one who will memorize the things you say as well as the shape of your lips when you say them. I want to know every curve, every freckle, every shiver of your body.
I want to know where to touch you, I want to know how to touch you. I want to convince you to design a smile just for me. Yes, I do want to be your friend. I want to be your best friend in the entire world." - Tahereh Mafi, Unravel Me

"You want me as much as I want you. And all I want is you."
My tongue warred with my mind. "Today," I whispered.
Noah stood slowly, his body skimming mine as he rose. "Today. Tonight. Tomorrow. Forever." - Michelle Hodkin, The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer

SOOOO.... Aren't they something? They know how to get me out of my funk.

Hope everyone enjoy their week!

Synopsis: All her life, Imogene has been known as the girl on THAT blog.

Imogene's mother has been writing an incredibly embarrassing, and incredibly popular, blog about her since before she was born. Hundreds of thousands of perfect strangers knew when Imogene had her first period. Imogene's crush saw her "before and after" orthodontia photos. But Imogene is fifteen now, and her mother is still blogging about her, in gruesome detail, against her will.

When a mandatory school project compels Imogene to start her own blog, Imogene is reluctant to expose even more of her life online...until she realizes that the project is the opportunity she's been waiting for to tell the truth about her life under the virtual microscope and to define herself for the first time.

Don't Call Me Baby is a sharply observed and irrepressibly charming story about mothers and daughters, best friends and first crushes, and the surface-level identities we show the world online and the truth you can see only in real life.
3 stars out of 5 stars

*I received an eARC of this book from the publisher but it did not influence this review in any way.*

I was searching through my crazy To Be Read pile and I picked up this book. Right from the beginning I was hooked. Imogene, Babylicious, has a funny, sarcastic, and relatable voice, so it was very easy to get sucked into the story. Don't Call Me Baby follows the story of Imogene as she deals with her mom being a mommy blogger and chronicles her every move with her readers. There's nothing that her mom, Mommylicious, won't share and Imogene has reached her limit on embarrassing situations and with everyone knowing everything about her.

Imogene and her best friend, Sage, whose mom is healthy food blogger, are forced to create a blog for their English class. Sage's mom basically controls everything that Sage eats and is obsessed with eating healthy. They decide to retaliate against their mothers and blog about them to show them how it feel to have no sense of privacy and choice. Their blogs end up taking both of them in different directions but it works for them in the end. I

I enjoyed this book. I like that it was a quick and funny read. I like how it explores how much being connected online ends up taking so much time over spending time with the people that are important and how sometimes you just need to unplugged for a few days. I do have to say that while some people may not like Imogene's mom, even I was irritated when she just couldn't see when Imogene wanted to have some shred of privacy, I still like her.

I do think that Don't Call Me Baby is geared towards the younger YA bracket as Imogene is 15 and has that tone of younger crowd. However, I still found it to be enjoyable and it did have some interesting topics that were discussed.

Review by: Nahomi
Quirky and clumsy twenty-two-year-old Paige Crawford arrives in London on a cold Saturday in January. Just when Paige starts to think that moving thousands of miles away from home with no real plan was a bad idea, Jason Frost appears. Confident and classy, Jason is the complete opposite of Paige and just what she needs in her life, or so she thinks.

But before their romance has time to blossom, Paige trips and falls into the arms of a mysterious man on a drunken night out. She’s snapped by paparazzi, and newspaper headlines the next day suggest that she’s having an affair with a married footballer.

Paige finds herself instantly elevated to tabloid celebrity status which isn’t exactly a picnic, particularly when trying to juggle her new job at Fashionista magazine, a catalog of dating disasters and a nagging doubt that she maybe she can’t conquer London after all.

When a trip back to Canada for Christmas reminds Paige why she left her old life behind, she returns to London with renewed vigor realizing that while jobs, flats and men may come and go, friends in London are forever.
3.5 stars out of 5 stars

Paige Crawford is tired of playing it safe, so in an attempt to find a new and exciting life she makes a rash decision to move to London. With two suit cases full of stuff and no idea what she is doing she heads out to try and conquer London. There were several parts of this story in which I found myself laughing out loud. Paige is, as she describes herself, a redneck from Canada and doesn't have a lot of experience outside of the predictable world she is used to. Paige is a little naive and gets herself into all sorts of crazy predicaments.

The pacing of the books is fairly fast paced. The dialogue and supporting characters were really interesting and added diversity to the story. There was a scene in the beginning of the book at a club that involved a vodka bottle and a transvestite that left me thinking WTF. This is a story of Paige's quest for self discover, as she tries to find a place in this world where she fits in.

I was however a little disappointed in the lack of romance throughout the story. Other than that I thought that Paiges endless nights of champagne and botched up dates were entertaining. If you like The Devil Wears Prada and Bridget Jones Diary, than this is the book for you.

Review: What I Though Was True by Huntley Fitzpatrick

Review by: Jenn
Synopsis: Gwen Castle's Biggest Mistake Ever, Cassidy Somers, is slumming it as a yard boy on her Nantucket-esque island this summer. He's a rich kid from across the bridge in Stony Bay, and she hails from a family of fishermen and housecleaners who keep the island's summer people happy. Gwen worries a life of cleaning houses will be her fate too, but just when it looks like she'll never escape her past—or the island—Gwen's dad gives her some shocking advice. Sparks fly and secret histories unspool as Gwen spends a gorgeous, restless summer struggling to resolve what she thought was true—about the place she lives, the people she loves, and even herself—with what really is.
3 stars out of 5 stars

What I Thought Was True was a cute read and I love the relationship that Fitzpatrick created with Gwen and her family. The love and affection she feels towards her them is also being overpowered her feeling of being suffocated by them and being stuck forever in Stony Bay. Huntely Fitzpatrick did a wonderful job at showing Gwen mixed feelings.

I love Gwen's family. All the ties and responsibilities and dynamics that goes on in that family is so real and fresh and something I don't typically seem to find in books. It was a page out of my family, that's how real it felt. Huntley did that wonderfully.

As my first Huntley Fitzpatrick's book, people have been raving about her other book My Life Next Door, I have to admit that didn't love this book. In fact I felt like the book was kind of slow and I didn't love Cass. We get so much back story and I felt like it slowed down the pace of the book. At one point, I was so irritated because I felt like the reveal of Gwen's and Cass's problem took forever to be told.

That's not say that I didn't enjoy the story because I did, I just didn't love it. I will be giving Huntley's book another try because I did enjoy her writing.

Quotes (#55)

Morning Swooners,
Hope you had a wonderful holiday this past weekend. My weekend was filled with catching up on a lot of backed up work, as well as time spent with the family. It was busy like always. Now it's time to start the week again, lets make this week a great one! Today's quotes are from a series I am really into at the moment, I hope you guys enjoy.

“Even if we fight, don’t you ever think I don’t want this. I want this more than I’ve wanted anything. I want YOU more than anything.”  ~Allie Everhart, Promising You

“I’m Jade, the sarcastic, independent, smart ass who has no interest in marriage or weddings or rings or any of that stuff. And yet my stupid heart skips a stupid beat when that stupid boy tosses out the idea that someday he might marry me.”  ~ Allie Everhart, Knowing You

“Most people need expensive cars or designer clothes to be happy. You just need pancakes. And snow.”  ~Allie Everhart, Knowing You

“He made me feel wanted and needed and not at all alone. I don’t understand how someone can affect me that way, but I don’t want that someone to go away.”  ~ Allie Everhart, Choosing You

“This seems like some type of romantic mood lighting.” I turn to him. “And I can tell you right now that you’re not getting sex tonight.”
He laughs and puts his hand on my shoulder. “Tonight? So you’d consider it some other night? Okay. That works for me.”  ~ Allie Everhart, Choosing You

“If the bad stuff didn’t exist, the good stuff wouldn’t seem so incredibly good.”
Allie Everhart, Knowing You

“I know this may come as a shock, Jade, but I’m not perfect.” He can’t even say it without laughing. “And neither are you.”
I sit up, trying not to laugh. “Hey, I’m totally perfect!”
“You’re not.” He lays me back down and drops a kiss on my lips. “Neither one of us is. But together we’re kind of perfect. So it works.” Allie Everhart, Promising You

Have a great week!

Review: Dear Killer by Katherine Ewell

Dear Killer
Author: Katherine Ewell
Release Date: April 1, 2014
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books

Review by: Jenn
Synopsis: Rule One—Nothing is right, nothing is wrong.
Rule Two—Be careful.
Rule Three—Fight using your legs whenever possible, because they’re the strongest part of your body. Your arms are the weakest.
Rule Four—Hit to kill. The first blow should be the last, if at all possible.
Rule Five—The letters are the law.

Kit takes her role as London’s notorious “Perfect Killer” seriously. The letters and cash that come to her via a secret mailbox are not a game; choosing who to kill is not an impulse decision. Every letter she receives begins with “Dear Killer,” and every time Kit murders, she leaves a letter with the dead body. Her moral nihilism and thus her murders are a way of life—the only way of life she has ever known.

But when a letter appears in the mailbox that will have the power to topple Kit’s convictions as perfectly as she commits her murders, she must make a decision: follow the only rules she has ever known, or challenge Rule One, and go from there.

Katherine Ewell’s Dear Killer is a sinister psychological thriller that explores the thin line between good and evil, and the messiness of that inevitable moment when life contradicts everything you believe.
2 stars out of 5 stars
*I received an eARC of this book from the publisher but it did not influence this review in any way*

This book had so much potential but unfortunately, for me it did not measure up. When I read the synopsis, the main character, Kit, reminded me a bit of Throne of Glass's Celaena Sardothien. They're both killers/assassin and Celaena's back story is so intense that I was excited about hopefully finding another character like her. However, Kit left me severely disappointed.

Kit is an awkward 17-year-old but to make things interesting, she's a 17 year-old serial killer. On top of that, she's a very famous serial killer but strangely enough, she's very cocky and reckless. She inserts herself in the "Perfect Killer" investigation helping out the detective that is in charge of her case and she befriends her potential victims. For someone who was taught to be be careful, she committed a lot of rookie mistakes.

On top of the fact that I couldn't click with Kit, there were some plot holes that had me questioning the story lines. Normally, I'm not one to really pick up on plot holes because I'm so immersed in what is happening that I just overlook them, but in this book, I found several. Like, how did the police not know where Kit gets her "mail" from considering every one know how get in contact with her? She's been getting her mail from there for years and not one police officer has figured it out? And how is a 25 year-old detective in charged of such a high profile case? It feels like such a convenient tool to create a love interest in a book that had nothing to do with romance.

I have to admit that I wrote the majority of this review while still reading Dear Killer, in fact, I was only 26% into the book. I was contemplating whether or not to Did Not Finish but I wanted to know how it would end. I guess I was just hoping to be proved wrong, that the book was going to get better. However, it just left a lot to be desired and I was even warned that the ending would be disappointing. Unfortunately, I was unable to click with Kit and had trouble just believing how convenient everything worked out.

4 stars out of 5 stars

I have had Choosing You on my TBR pile for a while now, and actually already owned the book when I was given the opportunity to do this blog tour. I was extremely excited about this tour because it actually allowed me to move this book up on my reading list! Initially I was nervous because I had been waiting for a while to read this book and didn’t want to be disappointed, and luckily I wasn’t. I really loved the story and the characters.

This book kept me up all night; I just couldn’t put it down. I needed to keep turning pages to see what would happen next. The pacing of this book was perfect and there was enough mystery to keep me intrigued and turning pages. Jade and Garrets relationship is sweet (mainly because of Garret and his thoughtfulness). Jade’s had a difficult past and has a hard time believing that people want to be nice to her. She has issues trusting people and believing that people don’t always have an ulterior motive when they are being nice to her. She is one tough girl and comes off as kind of prickly. Her internal monologue is something I had an issue with throughout the book. I get where she is coming from but it doesn’t stop me from rolling my eyes when I read it.

Garret is my newest book boyfriend! I love his character, and now I have a thing for guys with the name Garret; being that he is the second Garret on my book boyfriend list. Garret is thoughtful and sweet and all around a good guy. He’s not a goody two shoes or anything like that. Garret knows how to party and has had his share of sleeping around, but around Jade he wants to be better and cleans up his act. The things he says and does had me in a constant state of swooning. Did I mention he’s ridiculously good looking? Garret is on the swim team so his body is ripped; top this off with his blue eyes and it’s the perfect combination to have me drooling.

This story had a little of everything, there was angst, suspense, drama, and romance. I felt like it was an overall great read. I can’t believe how it ended! Now I have to get my hands on Knowing You to see what happens next.

Synopsis:
Georgie McCool knows her marriage is in trouble. That it’s been in trouble for a long time. She still loves her husband, Neal, and Neal still loves her, deeply — but that almost seems besides the point now.

Maybe that was always besides the point.

Two days before they’re supposed to visit Neal’s family in Omaha for Christmas, Georgie tells Neal that she can’t go. She’s a TV writer, and something’s come up on her show; she has to stay in Los Angeles. She knows that Neal will be upset with her — Neal is always a little upset with Georgie — but she doesn’t expect to him to pack up the kids and go home without her.

When her husband and the kids leave for the airport, Georgie wonders if she’s finally done it. If she’s ruined everything.

That night, Georgie discovers a way to communicate with Neal in the past. It’s not time travel, not exactly, but she feels like she’s been given an opportunity to fix her marriage before it starts...

Is that what she’s supposed to do?

Or would Georgie and Neal be better off if their marriage never happened?

I LOVE Rainbow Rowell. She has written some beautiful books and I would read anything that she writes and I can't wait to get my hands on this book. Can July get here already?

3.5 stars out of 5 stars
*I received a copy of this book as a Review Opportunity, in exchange or an honest review.*

Rachel and Jason meet one night on the Manhattan Bridge. Rachel is contemplating jumping into the dark abyss of the water in order to forget the mess that is her life. Jason sees her and convinces her not to jump and offers her a place to stay until she can get on her feet again. I thought this was a good  romance novel, but the beginning of the book set off about 30 different red flags for me. I won't go into too much detail because I don't normally like spoilers but I have to say the beginning of this novel was a little rough for me.

Maybe I am just channeling Jason's family and fiancee in my initial assessment of things. I think its great that Jason stopped to help Rachel, but to take her home and then sleep in the same bed with her was a bit much for me! I get that nothing inappropriate happens but still. On occasion the dialogue, and internal monologue of the main characters had me rolling my eyes a. At times I felt that there was a bit too much drama going on  for me, it felt exhausting.

Jason is a sweetheart, he is always so kind and treats Rachel with tenderness and respect. He makes me wonder if guys like him really exist, and if they do, where can I find one because he's perfect. I will say he seems like a push over at times but he works through it. Rachel is one tough cookie. I know I read what is going through her mind but man it was really hard for me to identify with her. Together, Jason and Rachel are perfect. They do a nice job of balancing each other out.

This was an emotional and sweet story. I wasn't able to give it a higher rating because the issues I mentioned above, although I did enjoy reading the story. I am happy I received the opportunity to review it.

“This engrossing thriller packs a heady atmospheric punch with plenty of theatrical scares,” Kirkus Reviews

“Armentrout has written another winner. From the first page to the last, she builds both terror and confusion to the point where readers will be hooked and on the edge of their seat. This standalone contains all of Armentrout’s usual trademarks– a strong and determined heroine, witty comments and hot guys–but she adds in an extra layer by ratcheting up the suspense to the highest degree and follows it up with an ending no one will see coming.” RT BOOK REVIEWS 4 1/2 Stars TOP PICK

Excerpt
I didn’t recognize the name on the street sign. Nothing about the rural road looked familiar or friendly. Tall, imposing trees and overgrown weeds choked the front of the dilapidated home.
Windows were boarded up. There was a gaping hole where the front door had been. I shivered, wanting to be far away from here…wherever here was.
Walking felt harder than it should be, and I stumbled off the chilly asphalt, wincing as sharp gravel dug into my feet.
My bare feet?
I stopped and looked down. Chipped pink nail polish peeked through the dirt…and blood.
Mud caked the legs of my pants, leaving the hems stiff. It made sense, seeing as how I wasn’t wearing any shoes, but the blood…I didn’t understand why there was blood staining the knees of my jeans.
My vision clouded and dulled, as if a gray film had been dropped over my eyes. As I stared at the weathered asphalt under my feet, large and smooth rocks replaced the tiny stones.
Something dark and oily seeped over the rocks, slipping through the cracks.
Sucking in a sharp gasp, I blinked and the image was gone.
Hands trembling, I raised them. They were also covered with dirt and scratches. My nails were broken, bloodied. A silver ring wrapped, encased in soil, around my thumb. Air froze in my chest as my gaze crawled over my arms. The sleeves of my sweater were torn, revealing pale flesh covered in bruises and gashes. My legs started to shake as I swayed forward. I tried to remember how this had happened, but my head was empty—a black void where nothing existed.
A car drove by, coasting to a stop a few feet in front of me. Somewhere in the trenches of my subconscious, I recognized the flashing red and blue lights as a source of safety. Elegantly scrawled along the black-and-gray side of the cruiser were the words ADAMS COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT.
Adams County? A flash of familiarity came and went.
The driver’s door opened, and a deputy stepped out. He said something into the radio on his shoulder before he looked at me.
“Miss?” He started around the cruiser, taking tentative steps. He looked young for a deputy. Barely out of high school and able to carry a gun seemed wrong somehow. Was I in high school? I didn’t know. “We’ve received some calls into dispatch concerning you,” he said gently. “Are you okay?”
I tried to respond, but only a hoarse squeak came out. Clearing my throat, I winced as the motion scratched and pulled. “I…I don’t know.”
“Okay.” The deputy held up his hands as he approached me, as if I were a skittish deer about to bolt. “My name is Deputy Rhode. I’m here to help you. Do you know what you’re doing out here?”
“No.” Knots formed in my belly. I didn’t even know where here was.
His smile strained. “What’s your name?”
My name? Everyone knew their name, but as I stared at the deputy, I couldn’t answer his question. The knots started twisting more. “I don’t…I don’t know what my name is.”
He blinked, and the smile was completely gone. “You don’t remember anything?”
I tried again, concentrating on the empty space between my ears. That was how it felt.
And I knew that wasn’t good. My eyes started to tear up.
“Miss, it’s okay. We’ll get you taken care of.” He reached out, lightly taking hold of my arm. “We’ll get this sorted.”
Deputy Rhode led me around the back of his cruiser. I didn’t want to sit behind the Plexiglas, because I knew that wasn’t good. Only bad people sat behind the glass in police cruisers. I wanted to object, but before I could say anything, he settled me into the seat and wrapped a coarse blanket around my shoulders.
Before he locked me in the bad part of the car, he knelt and smiled reassuringly.
“Everything’s going to be okay.”
But I knew he was lying, trying to make me feel better. It didn’t work. How could everything be okay when I didn’t know my own name?

5 stars out of 5 stars

I was worried while reading The Treatment. I was imagining all possible horrible scenarios about how it was going to end. Suzanne Young gave me a heart attack but I loved every second of it (sick, I know). I'm so impressed with how Suzanne ended The Treatment because I felt like it ended in a way where we can be okay with where characters are left and that they'll be able to pick up the pieces. If not, I would have been a sobbing mess in a darkened room, all heartbroken and wouldn't know who I am. Pun definitely intended.

The Treatment took me on a crazy roller coaster ride from the beginning of the book right until the last page. I felt myself feeling everything that Sloane experienced; the sadness, the loneliness, the fear, the doubt. Right along with Sloane, I experienced those near-misses of danger, her doubt of trusting Realm and the rest of the rebels. I applaud Suzanne for being such an awesome writer that I was able to experience these emotions all in one book.

I don't want to give too much away from the plot but I will say that it definitely lived up to my expectations. I'm very happy with how everything went down. Although I did feel like the beginning of the book was a little slow, I can overlook it because after that, so many things happens that you feel like you need a moment to collect yourself and understand what just happened. There was this moment when the shit is about to hit the fan and, while I knew it was bound to happen, I seriously felt like my heart was outside of my body. At that point, I had given up hope for Sloane and I had no idea what was going to happen and how she was getting herself out of that situation.

My only complaint of the book is the hint of a love triangle. Even though Sloane and James are in love, she is so grateful for Realm and what he did for her that it causes a rift between Sloane and James. For me, I felt like Sloane and company had bigger things to worry about than dealing with romance. The romance and love can come once they're safe.

If I could meet Suzanne Young, I would just praise her for being able to give her readers so many emotional conflicts. That is one of the things I've been able to take away from Suzanne Young's books. Her books will make you feel every possible emotion and make you think about the topic on hand. Bravo, Suzanne. Bravo.

If you're still with me, go out and buy this book. It is so good and definitely worth the wait.
