Dusty Reads (#5)

Dusty is a weekly meme, hosted by Giselle at Xpresso Reads, featuring a book that has been sitting unread on your home shelf for some time. Books don't have to be an "x" years old. If you had the books for a few month without reading it, it's dusty!

Hello lovelies,

For this week Dusty Reads I have
The Wish Maker by Ali Sethi
Publisher: Riverhead Books
The Wish Maker
(source)
Goodreads summary"The unforgettable story of a fatherless boy growing up in a household of outspoken women, The Wish Maker is also a tale of sacrifice, betrayal, and indestructible friendship. Zaki Shirazi and his female cousin Samar Api were raised to consider themselves "part of the same litter." Together they watched American television and memorized dialogue from Bollywood movies, attended dangerous protests, and formed secret friendships. In a household run by Zaki's crusading political journalist mother and iron-willed grandmother, it was impossible to imagine a future that could hold anything different for either of them.

But adolescence approaches and the cousins' fates diverge. Samar's unconventional behavior-in which Zaki has played the role of devoted helper-brings severe consequences for her, while Zaki is sent out to discover the world for himself. It is only after years of separation from Samar that he is forced to confront the true nature of happiness, selfhood, and commitment to those he loves most.

Chronicling world-changing events that have never been so intimately observed in fiction and brimming with unmistakable warmth and humor,The Wish Maker is the powerful account of a family and an era, a story that shows how, even in the most rapidly shifting circumstances, there are bonds that survive the tugs of convention, time, and history."

I've had this book for a few years, it was given to me as a birthday present. Has anyone read this book?

That it for now. What on your dusty shelf?

Cover Reveal - Through the Ever Night by Veronica Rossi

Hello lovelies,

Yesterday, Veronica Rossi revealed the cover for her follow-up novel, Through the Ever Sky, the second in the series of Under the Never Sky
Here the linky where she discussed some plans for a novella and more: http://veronicarossibooks.blogspot.com/2012/06/cover-reveal-through-ever-night.html

Isn't it gorgeous? I love the colors, the design and the cute guy. Although, he is supposed to be Perry, he's just not my Perry, ya know? I pictured a more rough-hardened guy and not in leather pants. But he's cute and it came out great.

Through the Ever Sky is expected to be release on January 8, 2013.

What do you think? Love it? Hate it?

Currently Reading - Pushing the Limits by Katie McGarry

Morning lovelies,

At the moment I am Currently Reading Pushing the Limits by Katie McGarry. I've heard many great things about this novel and I can't wait to finish and share my review of it with you, swooners. I managed to get an early egalley through NetGalley and Harlequin Teen. Its expected publication is set for July 31, 2012. As soon as I'm done I'll get started on the review. It should be up posted by this weekend.

Have great day everyone!

Review: The Unquiet by Jeannine Garsee

Expected publication: July 17, 2012
Publisher: Bloomsbury USA

*I received this egalley from Bloomsbury USA through NetGalley*

My rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Summary from author's website: "Sixteen-year-old Rinn Jacobs has secrets: One, she's Bipolar. Two, she killed her grandmother.
After a suicide attempt, and now her parent's separation, Rinn and her mom move from California to the rural Ohio town where her mother grew up. Back on her medications (again!) and hoping to stay well, Rinn settles into her new home and school. She refuses to be daunted by the fact that the previous owner hanged herself in Rinn's bedroom, or that her classmates believe the school pool is haunted by Annaliese, a girl who drowned there. But when a reckless seance goes awry, and terrible things start happening to her new friends - yet not to her - Rinn is determined to find out why she can't be 'touched' by Annaliese...or if Annaliese even exits.
With the help of Nate Brenner, the hunky 'farm boy' she is rapidly falling for, Rinn devises a dangerous plan to uncover the truth. Soon reality and fantasy meld into one, till Rinn finds it nearly impossible to tell the difference. When a malevolent force threatens the lives of everyone she cares about - not mention her own - she can't help wondering: who should she really be afraid of?
Annaliese? Or herself?"

The Unquiet's premise really piqued my interest and I couldn't wait to just pick it up and read. I enjoy stories where there are some sort of mental illness and the fact there was some paranormal in it as well, it just made me super excited when I got this book. See, I have a degree in Psychology and I work in the mental health field, so I have some background information on Bipolar disorder. I see people coming in to the office on a daily basis but I have no idea what it really like for someone living with that illness that it not off a textbook.

I totally enjoyed getting to know Rinn's character. She is this sarcastic, stubborn girl with a lot of sass but who is also vulnerable and distant because she is Bipolar. She's aware that she needs to take her medications but she also misses the 'high' she used to experienced when not on them. However, she is trying to keep her promise in taking them as a promise for her parent. When we first meet Rinn, my first thought was "Oh no. Don't tell me she's a bratty teenager with an attitude and complaining about not getting her way and etc...." But after that initial meeting, I was curious because we were introduced to Rinn, Rinn's mom Monica, Millie and Nate. Rinn and Nate were so cute in the first meeting and exchanging some funny quips about Rinn being a California girl and Nate being a farm boy.

Quotes (#4)

Morning lovelies,

Are you awake yet? ;)

Let's get on with quotes, hmm?

"In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on." - Robert Frost

"Don't let the fear of the time it will take to accomplish something stand in the way of your doing it. The time will pass anyway; we might just as well put that passing time to the best possible use." - Earl Nightingale

"French name, English accent, American school. Anna confused." - Stephanie Perkins, Anna and the French Kiss

"The truth. It is a beautiful and terrible thing and should be treated with caution." - J.K.Rowling

"Lola?" Cricket is on his knees at the side of my bed. I feel it. "I'm here," he whispers. "You can talk to me or not, but I'm here." - Stephanie Perkins, Lola and the Boy Next Door

That it for today. I hope everyone has a nice Monday and a great week!

Review: One Moment by Kristina McBride

One MomentOne Moment
By: Kristina McBride
Release Date: June 26, 2012
Publisher: EgmontUSA
This was supposed to be the best summer of Maggie's life. Now it's the one she'd do anything to forget.
Maggie Reynolds remembers hanging out at the gorge with her closest friends after a blowout party the night before. She remembers climbing the trail hand in hand with her perfect boyfriend, Joey. She remembers that last kiss, soft, lingering, and meant to reassure her. So why can't she remember what happened in the moment before they were supposed to dive? Why was she left cowering at the top of the cliff, while Joey floated in the water below- dead?
As Maggie's memories return in snatches, nothing seems to make sense. Why was Joey acting so strangely at the party? Where did he go after taking her home? And if Joey was keeping secrets, what else was he hiding?

3.5 out of 5 stars

*I received this early egalley from EgmontUSA through NetGalley*

One Moment is about a girl named Maggie who has a group of five friends and in one of the weekend before the end her junior year, one of them dies. The problem is that it was Maggie's boyfriend, Joey, who died, and she was with him during his last moments. She can't remember what happened during those moments Joey was alive and she struggles throughout the novel in trying to bring those memories back.

Right after Joey's death Maggie tries to remember those missing moments but once she learns that Joey may have been hiding secrets from her, it seems like she then tried to avoid remembering them. However, I can't judge her too harshly since I cannot even imagine going through that kind of trauma and I would want to avoid it myself. Especially once she realizes that the Joey she knew may not have been who he really was. My curiosity was piqued and I wanted to know where Joey had gone after dropping everyone home after the party on Saturday night.

Stacking the Shelves (#6)

Stacking the shelves, which is hosted by Tynga's Review, is all about sharing the books you are adding to you shelves, may it be physical or virtual. This mean you can include books you buy in a physical store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts and of course, ebooks!

Hello lovelies,

It that time of the week again. This week, I went to Barnes and Noble with a friend since she wanted to pick up some books for herself. I tagged along since I wanted to get a book for my mom and I figured I could splurge on a book for myself too.

I walked out with three books myself and one for my mother. Yea, I know. I'm weak.

I have an actual picture this time:

Gone, Gone, Gone by Hannah Moskowitz: "It's a year after 9/11. Sniper shootings throughout the D.C. area have everyone on edge and trying to make sense of these random acts of violence. Meanwhile, Craig and Lio are just trying to make sense of their lives. Craig's crushing on quiet, distant Lio, and preoccupied with what it meant when Lio kissed him...and if he'll do it again...and if kissing Lio will help him finally get over his ex-boyfriend, Cody. Lio feels most alive when he's with Craig. He forgets about is broke family, his dead brother, and the messed up world. But being with Craig means being vulnerable...and Lio will have to decide whether love is worth the risk."

Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick: "For Nora Grey, romance was not part of the plan. She's never been particularly attracted to the boys at her school, no matter how much her best friend, Vee, pushes them at her...until Patch comes along. With his easy smile and eyes that seem to see inside her, Nora is drawn to him against her better judgment, but after a series encounters, Nora's not sure whom to trust. Patch seems to be everywhere she is, and to know more about her than her closest friends. She can't decide whether she should fall into his arms or run and hide. And when she tries to seek some answers, she finds herself near a truth far more unsettling than anything Patch makes her feel.
For Nora is right in the middle of an ancient battle between the immortals and those that have fallen - and when it comes to choosing sides, the wrong choice will cost her life."

Sizzling Sixteen by Janet Evanovich: "Trenton, New Jersey, bounty hunter Stephanie Plum has inherited a 'lucky' bottle from her Uncle Pip. Problem is, Uncle Pip didn't specify if the bottle brought good luck or bad luck...

BAD LUCK:
Vinnie, of Vincent Plum Bail Bonds, has run up a gambling debt of $786,000 with mobster Bobby Sunflower and is being held until the cash can be produced. Nobody else will pay to get Vinnie back, leaving it up to Stephanie, office manager Connie, and file clerk Lula to raise the money if they want to save their jobs.

GOOD LUCK:
Being in the business of tracking down people, Stephanie, Lula, and Connie have an advantage in finding Vinnie. If they can rescue him, it will buy them some time to raise the cash.

BAD LUCK:
Finding a safe place to hide Vinnie turns out to be harder than raising $786,000. Vinnie's messing up Mooner's vibe, running up pay-per-view porn charges in Ranger's apartment, and making Stephanie question genetics.

GOOD LUCK:
Between a bonds office yard sale that has the entire Burg turning out, Mooner's Hobbit-Con charity event, and Uncle Pip's lucky bottle, they might just raise enough money to save the business, and Vinnie, from ruin.

BAD LUCK:
Saving Vincent Plum Bail Bonds means Stephanie can keep being a bounty hunter. In Trenton, this involves hunting down a man wanted for polygamy, a turnpike toilet paper bandit, and a drug dealer with a pet alligator named Mr. Jingles.

GOOD LUCK:
The job of a bounty hunter comes with perks in the guise of Trenton's hottest cop, Joe Morelli, and the dark and dangerous security expert, Ranger. With any luck at all, Uncle Pip's lucky bottle will have Stephanie getting lucky -- the only questions is...with whom?

That is it for now. Hope everyone has a nice weekend.

I started blogging back in late March of this year but I didn't get into the habit of blogging until May.

2. Why did you start blogging?
I decided to start my own blog because it was something I had been thinking about for a while but I was too scare to take the plunge. I'd been reading so much lately that I wanted to keep track of the books I've read. Also, I figured it would be fun =)

3. Who is your favorite author?
I don't really have a favorite author! It just too hard to narrow it down at this point, hehe. I have authors that I truly love the way they write and they are: Cynthia Hand, Tahereh Mafi, J.K. Rowling and Stephanie Perkins.

4. What is your favorite book?
Guh, another hard question. Honestly, this changes by the day. And it the same like in the previous answer. I have several favorites that I thoroughly enjoy, but no real favorite favorite.

5. Do you have any ARCs right now? If so, what?
I guess if you can count the books I received from NetGalley ARCs, I do, but not really.
6. What are you currently reading?
     The Unquiet by Jeannine Garsee.

7. How many books are on your TBR pile?
Too many. But in order to keep myself sane, I try to organize myself by writing down my next 10 books to-read at a time.

8. If you could be a book character for a day, who would you be? Why?
Tris from Divergent by Veronica Roth.

9. What is your favorite place to read? Why?
I have this little hammock-style chair in my backyard that I love. It awesome for reading on a nice, breezy day. It just sucks with all those mosquitoes in the summer.

10. Do you prefer Australian or British accents?
Hmmm...tough question too ;). And it also harder since two of my celebrity crushes represents both. So I'm going to say both!

Vote for your YA Crush!

Hello lovelies,

The YA Sisterhood is hosting their 2nd annual YA Crush Tourney and right now they are accepting nominations for our fictional crushes. Did you swooned over Noah Shaw in The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer? Or wish you had your own Four/Tobias from Divergent and Insurgent? Did you gave in to the Deliria for Alex in Delirium? Are you still bitter that Katniss chose Peeta over Gale in The Hunger Games series? (I know I can't be the only one). Wished that Adam from If I Stay and Where She Went would write you a song? The point of the matter is to nominate those crushes that you have and see who end up winning the Crush Tourney.
It all for fun and games so if your crush is not on the list, there's still a whole list of swoony boys to nominate and get to know.

Nominations ends today, June 19th at midnight (Central time).

Here's the linky to the Tourney: http://ya-sisterhood.blogspot.com/2012/06/ya-crush-tourney-20-nominations.html

Quotes (#3)

Hello lovelies,

Who is ready for some quotes??

"But Tucker is my choice. I love him. That isn't going to go away." - Cynthia Hand, Hallowed
(Sorry, I know I just did a review on it but I'm still need to swoon over this book).

"Finally, from so little sleeping and so much reading, his brain dried up and he went completely out of his mind." - Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, Don Quixote

"Don't afraid of death; be afraid of of an unlived life. You don't have to live forever, you just have to live." - Natalie Babbitt, Tuck Everlasting

"So what do I wish for? Something I'm not sure I want? Someone I'm not sure I need? Or someone I know I can't have?" - Stephanie Perkins, Anna and the French Kiss

"The words gets easier the moment you stop fearing them." - Tahereh Mafi
(Really like this quote. I keep trying to remind myself of this)

That's it for now. Do you have any favorite quotes?

Review: Hallowed by Cynthia Hand

Hallowed (Unearthly, #2)Hallowed by Cynthia Hand
Released Date: January 17, 2012
Publisher: HarperTeen

My Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Summary from Goodreads: "For months part-angel Clara Gardner trained to face the raging forest fire from her visions and rescue the alluring and mysterious Christian Prescott from the blaze. But nothing could prepare her for the fateful decisions she would be forced to make that day, or the startling revelation that her purpose - the task she was put on Earth to accomplish - is not as straightforward as she thought.

Now, torn between her increasingly complicated feelings for Christian and her love for her boyfriend, Tucker, Clara struggles to make sense of what she supposed to do the day of the fire. And, as she is drawn further into the world of part angels and the growing conflict between White Wings and Black Wings, Clara learns of the terrifying new reality that she must face: Someone close to her will die in a matter of months. With her future uncertain, the only thing Clara knows for sure is that the fire was just the beginning."

I feel the need for a disclaimer, so here it is: *Be prepared for some flails. There will be some lots of them. Oh, and some spoilers. *

First off, I'm the biggest Tucker Avery supporter. I have been on his team since day one and I will admit to being petty while discussing him and Christian with my friends; I just don't want to get hurt. I will gladly take him off Clara's hand if she is too busy. *grabby hands* Team Tucker up in here.

I'm Team Edward, too, yo.

Blood of the Revenant by N.R. Allen
Blood of the Revenant
From Goodreads: "Something strange is happening in Returning City, something dangerous.

Gabriel has never questioned things before. He knows that because he is a revenant like everyone else, he has to fight the not-family and hurt them to keep his own family safe. He has never questioned that the sky is always dark or that hungry things watch him from the forest.

But in Returning City, everyone has secrets.

Gabriel grew up believing that he was the same as everyone else. But now, things are changing. He begins to see strange, monstrous creatures instead of the people he has always known. Struggling to protect his family, Gabriel must turn to a mysterious stranger, but is she only helping him for her own dark purposes?

In order to survive, Gabriel has to become more than he has ever been, and he will have to go against all he has ever known. Soon Gabriel will realize that something dangerous waits for him—his past—and that past holds a secret deadlier than anything he could ever imagine."

Hello lovelies,

This week Dusty Reads,

Dirty Girls On Top by Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez
Dirty Girls on Top (Dirty Girls, #2)

Summary from Goodreads: "The Dirty Girls are back, saucier and sexier than ever….but would it be wrong to ask them to be a little smarter, too?? Especially when it comes to men. And sex.
Lauren Fernandez is at the top of her game as the cleverest columnist theBoston Gazette has on board—but she can't quite figure out how to pick a guy or how to eat (and not drink) like a healthy person.  Usnavys is still sashaying all over town, 260 pounds of her dolled up in designer duds and ready for action—from anyone except her husband Juan, that is.  He’s become just a bit boring staying home scrubbing the tub and cooking up chicken fingers for pre-schooler Carolina while somebodyelse brings home the bacon.
Maybe the other Dirty Girls could help Lauren and ‘navy out, but they've got their own messes to deal with: Rebecca Baca hasn't gained a pound since college (well, who would, if they had an ounce of self-control?) but suspects her picture-perfect marriage may not yield the baby she longs for; Sara may be the star of her own decorating show on cable television, but her dangerous pull toward her ex-husband Roberto isn't so pretty;  Amber keeps renaming herself and doesn't want to hear that her soulfulness and reinvention aren't enough to make fans actually buy her music; and Elizabeth is discovering that a relationship with another woman takes more than bravery and a nesting instinct.
Dirty Girls on Top is about trying to figure it all out without quite as much time left as there was five years ago.  And it’s about sex and love—getting it, not getting it, yearning for it, having it with the wrong person, fighting it from the right person, trying it a new way, giving up on it. And, in the end, if your fingers are crossed and the planets are in alignment, having it come out just the way it should."

Quotes (#2)

Hello lovelies,

#Truth

In case you're having the case of Mondays (me too), how about some quotes?

"Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another: 'What! You too? I thought I was the only one.' " - C.S. Lewis

"Dumbledore watched her fly away, and as her silvery glow faded he turned back to Snape, and his eyes were full of tears. 'After all this time?' 'Always,' said Snape." - J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

"I finally understood what true love meant...love meant that you care for another person's happiness more than your own, no matter how painful the choices you face might be." - Nicholas Sparks, Dear John

"You is kind. You is smart. You is important." - Kathryn Stockett, The Help

" 'Let's just say you may regret that second piece of cake.' Oh my God. Regret cake? Whatever was about to happen must be truly evil." - Rachel Hawkins, Hex Hall (Hex Hall, #1)

Have a great Monday, you guys!

Hello lovelies,

This week was a small haul as well. I got one book from Harlequin Teen/NetGalley.

Pushing the Limits by Katie McGarry
Pushing the Limits
Goodreads Summary: "No one knows what happened the night Echo Emerson went from popular girl with jock boyfriend to gossiped-about outsider with "freaky" scars on her arms.  Even Echo can't remember the whole truth of that horrible night. All she knows is that she wants everything to go back to normal. But when Noah Hutchins, the smoking-hot, girl-using loner in the black leather jacket, explodes into her life with his tough attitude and surprising understanding, Echo's world shifts in ways she could never have imagined. They should have nothing in common. And with the secrets they both keep, being together is pretty much impossible. Yet the crazy attraction between them refuses to go away. And Echo has to ask herself just how far they can push the limits and what she'll risk for the one guy who might teach her how to love again."

Responsible Jenn is still in control so no more books until I get through the reviews I have on the back burner. But I am super excited about starting this novel. This novel has been generating a lot of buzz and I can't wait to see what it is all about.

Did you add anything new to your shelves?

Review: Shadowfever by Karen Marie Moning

Shadowfever (Fever, #5)
Shadowfever by Karen Marie Moning
Released Date: January 18, 2011
My Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

From Goodreads: "MacKayla Lane was just a child when she and her sister, Alina, were given up for adoption and banished from Ireland forever.

Twenty years later, Alina is dead and Mac has returned to the country that expelled them to hunt her sister's murderer. But after discovering that she descends from a bloodline both gifted and cursed, Mac is plunged into a secret history: an ancient conflict between humans and immortals who have lived concealed among us for thousands of years.

What follows is a shocking chain of events with devastating consequences, and now Mac struggles to cope with grief while continuing her mission to acquire and control the Sinsar Dubh - a book of dark, forbidden magic scribed by the mythical Unseelie King, containing the power to create and destroy worlds.

In an epic battle between humans and Fae, the hunter becomes the hunted when the Sinsar Dubh turn on Mac and begins mowing a deadly path through those she loves.

Who can she turn to? Who can she trust? Who is the woman haunting her dreams? More important, who is Mac herself and what is the destiny she glimpses in the black and crimson designs of an ancient tarot card?

From the luxury of the Lord Master's penthouse to the sordid depths of an Unseelie nightclub, from the erotic bed of her lover to the terrifying bed of the Unseelie King, Mac's journey will force her to face the truth of her exile, and to make a choice that will either save the world...or destroy it."

Well, it took 5 books but I finally got the majority of my questions answered. And boy, it was one hell of a ride. I was right up to the last 10% of the book and I was still worried about what was happening and what the outcome was going to be. Not every questions was answered, but the ending was open to all sort of possibilitiies that left the reader, at least me, satisfied and in giving each character their own ending.

Now, I like to maintain a spoiler-free zone in this blog so I won't say anything that will give too much away (but I will later on) but HOLY CRAP I WAS NOT EXPECTING THAT. You know, that part towards the end? In the abbey? Yea. HOLY CRAP. I was so surprised, heck I'm still surprised and I finished the book over a week ago. But yes. WOW.

I wanted to bookmark some of the passages from the novel on my Nook that I really enjoyed and to share it with you guys but I basically ended up highlighting and bookmarking the whole book. Ok, that a slight exaggeration (a little).

*So for those who wish not to be spoiled, beware. Spoilers ahead*

Dusty Reads (#3)

Dusty Reads is a weekly meme, hosted by Giselle at Xpresso Reads, featuring a book that has been sitting unread on your home shelf for some time.

Hello lovelies,

This week Dusty Reads are:

The Ritual by Adam Nevill
The Ritual

From Goodreads: "When four old University friends set off into the Scandinavian wilderness of the Arctic Circle, they aim to briefly escape the problems of their lives and reconnect with one another. But when Luke, the only man still single and living a precarious existence, finds he has little left in common with his well-heeled friends, tensions rise. With limited experience between them, a shortcut meant to ease their hike turns into a nightmare scenario that could cost them their lives. Lost, hungry, and surrounded by forest untouched for millennia, Luke figures things couldn’t possibly get any worse. But then they stumble across an old habitation. Ancient artefacts decorate the walls and there are bones scattered upon the dry floors. The residue of old rites and pagan sacrifice for something that still exists in the forest. Something responsible for the bestial presence that follows their every step. As the four friends stagger in the direction of salvation, they learn that death doesn’t come easy among these ancient trees . . ."

Hello lovelies,

This week haul is a small one. My responsible side came out and reprimanded my fun and childish side and told me not purchase/borrow any more books until I read the one I currently have from the publisher and on my nightstand. Boo, I know. I hate being responsible sometimes.

So without further ado, this week I bought:
