Quotes (#76)

This how I felt at first

Now I don't want to move

Morning Lovelies!

I hope you all had a great weekend. Nahomi and I actually did our fist 5k Trail Run yesterday and OMG. That was such an experience. I don't know if I can do that again. There were some close calls in our training and we actually slacked off at the end (I'm blaming school for because those 4:30am wake up calls came WAY too early after staying up until after midnight doing school work). But we did it! We'll see if we can try that again. Maybe or maybe not. Let's do some quotes, though. Here we go.

“Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” - Mary Oliver

“One must live as if it would be forever, and as if one might die each moment. Always both at once.”- Mary RenaultThe Persian Boy

“You can't stay in your corner of the Forest waiting for others to come to you. You have to go to them sometimes.” - A.A. MilneWinnie-the-Pooh

“What is the point of being alive if you don't at least try to do something remarkable?” - John GreenAn Abundance of Katherines

“For sometimes you can't help but crave some ruin in what you love.” - Chang-rae LeeOn Such a Full Sea

“Wherever you go becomes a part of you somehow.” - Anita Desai

“Anyone can be a barbarian; it requires a terrible effort to remain a civilized man." - Leonard Woolf

Alexa Hollen is a fighter. Forced to disguise herself as a boy and serve in the king's army, Alex uses her quick wit and fierce sword-fighting skills to earn a spot on the elite prince's guard. But when a powerful sorcerer sneaks into the palace in the dead of night, even Alex, who is virtually unbeatable, can't prevent him from abducting her, her fellow guard and friend Rylan, and Prince Damian, taking them through the treacherous wilds of the jungle and deep into enemy territory.

The longer Alex is held captive with both Rylan and the prince, the more she realizes that she is not the only one who has been keeping dangerous secrets. And suddenly, after her own secret is revealed, Alex finds herself confronted with two men vying for her heart: the safe and steady Rylan, who has always cared for her, and the dark, intriguing Damian. With hidden foes lurking around every corner, is Alex strong enough to save herself and the kingdom she's sworn to protect?

I read this book earlier this year and I am totally obsessed! I don't normally like love triangles but this book is soo goood, I didn't even mind.  Alex's story definitely pulled at my heart strings more than a couple of times. I am dying to get my hands on part two of this series.

Sara lives in Utah with her husband and three young children. She writes during naptime and the hours when most people are sleeping. Her husband claims she should have a degree in "the art of multitasking." On occasion you will find her hiding in a bubble bath with a book and some Swedish Fish or some mint chocolate truffles. She is represented by Josh Adams of Adams Literary.

Inspire by Cora Carmack
Expected Release Day: December 15, 2014
Cover designed by: VLC Productions
Links: Goodreads
Synopsis:
Kalliope lives with one purpose.
To inspire.
As an immortal muse, she doesn’t have any other choice. It’s part of how she was made. Musicians, artists, actors—they use her to advance their art, and she uses them to survive. She moves from one artist to the next, never staying long enough to get attached. But all she wants is a different life— a normal one. She’s spent thousands of years living lie after lie, and now she’s ready for something real.
Sweet, sexy, and steady, Wilder Bell feels more real than anything else in her long existence. And most importantly… he’s not an artist. He doesn’t want her for her ability. But she can’t turn off the way she influences people, not even to save a man she might love. Because in small doses, she can help make something beautiful, but her ability has just as much capacity to destroy as it does to create. The longer she stays, the more obsessed Wilder will become. It’s happened before, and it never turns out well for the mortal.
Her presence may inspire genius.
But it breeds madness, too.

As things begin to heat up between Mikayla and the one guy she should avoid, will Lucy be able to keep her cool or will the girls' perfect summer turn into one hot mess?
2.5 stars out of 5 stars
*I received an eARC of this book from the publisher but it did not influence this review in any way.*

How to Meet Boys follows the story of Lucy and Mikayla as they navigate their summer away from home. I was really excited about starting this book. I've been in a contemporary kick lately and I just wanted to get my grabby hands on another cute, fluffy, romantic read. How to Meet Boys delivered but only on certain parts.

My biggest turn off was that I just couldn't click with any of the main characters. Both Lucy and Mikayla didn't sound like a pair of 17 years old seniors. In fact, they sounded a bit immature, which didn't make sense since they were spending their summer vacation in a cabin with no parental supervision. I also feel like Mikayla was a little too plain and bland and I just couldn't relate to her. My other problem with the story was that the plot felt a little to contrived and and dramatic just for the sake of drama and that is always a turn off. It was too convenient how everything managed to work out for the girls.

What I did enjoy was how close the girls are and I like how they managed to make up after some misunderstandings. I also love the small town vibe the story takes place in. It sound like such a idyllic little town and I can easily picture the girls riding their bikes around town.

I thought this was a cute read but it didn't quite live up to my expectations. I hope some other readers do end up liking it though.

Review: Opposition by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Opposition (Lux #5)
Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
Release Date: August 5, 2014
Publisher: Entangled Teen

Review by: Nahomi
Katy knows the world changed the night the Luxen came.

She can't believe Daemon welcomed his race or stood by as his kind threatened to obliterate every last human and hybrid on Earth. But the lines between good and bad have blurred, and love has become an emotion that could destroy her—could destroy them all.

Daemon will do anything to save those he loves, even if it means betrayal.

They must team with an unlikely enemy if there is any chance of surviving the invasion. But when it quickly becomes impossible to tell friend from foe, and the world is crumbling around them, they may lose everything— even what they cherish most—to ensure the survival of their friends…and mankind.

War has come to Earth. And no matter the outcome, the future will never be the same for those left standing.

4 stars out of 5 stars

I was anxiously awaiting the release of Opposition being that it is the last book of one of my favorite series. Considering how Origin ended, I was a little desperate to get my hands on this book. This book had me hooked from beginning to end, which is great except that when you are getting towards the end of the story you start to run out of pages and things aren't any closer to being resolved.

This story has the same great characters as all of the books before it. Opposition  is action packed and will have you turning pages as fast as you can get through them. There is a lot of emotional turmoil going on throughout the story. There were sacrifices being made by both Katy and Daemon throughout the book. I love the progression of their relationship, although there were times when Daemon scared the hell out of me with the way he was acting.

I was really happy with the story until the end. There were so many unanswered questions and a whole lot of build up to this great big fight against the Luxen who have come to invade earth; then in the matter of like a page or two the big fight ended in the blink of an eye. For all of its mystery and buildup I feel it fell flat when it came to the climax of the story. I like to call it the magic wand effect, when you think that things can't get any worse *ping* the solution magically appears and the story moves on to the end *poof*. Either way aside from that I really enjoyed reading this book. I loved where the characters ended up.

Excerpt
As I lay there, trying to swallow a loud, obnoxious yawn, I remembered something he’d said when we first met, about life being too short. I imagined he had firsthand experience with shortened lives while he was serving. That mentality came from experience. I got that now. Could even understand it, but there was something I didn’t understand.
“Why?” I asked.
There was a beat. “Why what?”
Jax sounded tired, and I should shut up or point out that I was now tired and could sleep, so he could leave. But I didn’t. “Why are you here? You don’t know me and . . .” I trailed off, because there really wasn’t anything left to say.
A minute went by, and he hadn’t answered my question, and then I think another minute ticked on, and I was okay with him not answering because maybe he didn’t even know. Or maybe he was just bored and that was why he was here.
But then he moved.
Jax pressed against my back, and the next breath I took got stuck in my throat. My eyes shot open. The sheet and blanket were between us, but they felt like nothing.
“What are you doing?” I asked.
“Getting comfortable.” He dropped an arm over my waist, and my entire body jerked against his. “It’s time to sleep I think.”
“But—”
“You can’t sleep when you talk,” he remarked.
“You don’t need to be all up on me,” I pointed out.
His answering chuckle stirred the hair along the back of my neck. “Honey, I’m not all up on you.”
I freaking begged to differ on that point. I started to wiggle away, but the arm around my waist tightened, holding me in place.
“You’re not going anywhere,” he announced casually, as if he wasn’t holding me prisoner in the bed.
Okay. The whole prisoner thing might be melodramatic, but he wasn’t letting me up. Not when he was getting all kinds of comfy behind me.
Oh my God, this was spooning. Total spooning. I was spooning with an honorary member of the Hot Guy Brigade. Did I wake up in a parallel universe?
“Sleep,” he demanded, as if the one word carried that much power. “Go to sleep, Calla.” This time his voice was softer, quieter.
“Yeah, it doesn’t work that way, Jax. You have a nice voice, but it doesn’t hold the power to make me sleep on your command.”
He chuckled.
I rolled my eyes, but the most ridiculous thing ever was the fact that after a couple of minutes, my eyes stayed shut. I . . . I actually settled in against him. With his front pressed to my back, his long legs cradling mine, and his arm snug around my waist, I actually did feel safe. More than that, I felt something else—something I hadn’t felt in years.
I felt cared for . . . cherished.
Which was the epitome of dumb, because I barely knew him, but feeling that, recognizing what the warm, buzzing feeling was, I fell right asleep.

Excerpt
“Okay. All right. This can be managed. It can. I can manage this,” says Haley. “This is entirely under my control. I can own this situation.”
“I don’t need to be managed.”
Haley tosses me an are-you-for-real gaze and her hair tumbles over her shoulder. It’s shiny and I bet if I ran my fingers through it, the strands would feel like silk. I like hair like that. I like kissing girls who have hair like that. My eyes flash to her lips and the memory of her stepping into me on Friday night sizzles in my mind: the walking, talking inferno. Kissing Haley would be a thrill ride experience.
“West?” Haley motions near her eyes. “Attention here, please?”
“I wasn’t checking out your curves.” Though now that it’s mentioned…
“Go there and I swear to God you’ll have to check ‘other’ when asked if you’re male or female.”
I chuckle and rest my palm against the cool cinder block wall, crowding her. Haley shifts and practically shrinks into the corner. She’s shorter than me, but not by much. I’d say she was afraid, but the way she studies my biceps tells me differently.
“Haley?” She refocuses on my face. “Eyes up here please.”
Gaped. Open. Mouth. “Okay, look. Me and you. We’ve got problems.”
I agree. She wants to kiss me. I want her body underneath mine. Nothing a dark room and a bed couldn’t solve. “What are you doing after school?”
“What? No. Don’t tell me. I don’t care. Back to problems. Those guys that jumped us on Friday?”
My hand slips off the wall and I straighten. “Yeah?”
“They go to school here and I’m not exactly their best friend.”

I also have a teaser for the Katie's next book, Breaking the Rules, which features Noah and Echo.

Review: Crash Into Me by Albert Borris

Crash Into Me
Author: Albert Borris
Release Date: July 7, 2009
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Source: ARCycling
Guest Review by: Samantha
Owen, Frank, Audrey, and Jin-Ae have one thing in common: they all want to die. When they meet online after each attempts suicide and fails, the four teens make a deadly pact: they will escape together on a summer road trip to visit the sites of celebrity suicides...and at their final destination, they will all end their lives. As they drive cross-country, bonding over their dark impulses, sharing their deepest secrets and desires, living it up, hooking up, and becoming true friends, each must decide whether life is worth living--or if there's no turning back. "Crash Into Me puts readers in the driver's seat with four teens teetering on the edge of suicide. But will their cross country odyssey push them all the way over? Only the final page turn will tell, in Albert Borris's finely-crafted tale of friendship forged from a desperate need of connection.

3 stars out of 5 stars

When I stumbled upon this book and read the synopsis on the back cover for the first time, it gave off this implication of eagerness to become a life changing young adult coming of age novel that would appeal to teenagers all over the world for truly depicting the hardships adolescents face every day, which in all honesty, the novel did not achieve.

I did not find this book relatable or alluring and perhaps it was on the grounds that I do not want to commit suicide, although as an author who writes novels with teenage characters for an audience of young adults, it is his or her job to make sure the reader is completely enthralled inside the world of the narrative story no matter the topic and understands who the characters are, what they are thinking and why they are thinking that.

One aspect I judged refreshing in this storyline was the friendship among Owen, Frank, Audrey, and Jin-Ae, which I notion the characters could have had a little bit more depth in terms of character development. This band of juveniles are all so loosely tied to one another and hail from such distinct backgrounds and personalities, it seems almost impossible that these youngsters would even become acquaintances, except for the fact that they all want to check out of life for good. I thought their companionship was engaging and oddly beautiful in a way. They were all lost within themselves by virtue of their emotional issues that accompany being a teenager, trying to find their sense of purpose similar to every other expected to act like an adult, but treated like a child adolescent and needed each other to help find acceptance for so-called misfits in a world lacking approval.

An element of the novel that is empathetic is how Owen, Frank, Audrey, and Jin- Ae throughout their suicidal odyssey become indecisively hesitant to whether or not they are going to end their lives, something representative of all teenagers and the stress that comes with facing adulthood.

The plot was predictable considering the fact that the whole storyline was basically told on the back of the book jacket. I did not understand the reasoning behind why these teenagers wanted to commit suicide and found myself sighing in exasperation every time the conversation led to what they were going to do at Death Valley, their final destination.

In essence, I anticipated an immense sentimental turning point or a somewhat life- transforming revelation that would leave me breathless and sobbing in my pillow. “Crash into me,” is a mediocre and inherently dissatisfying novel with an easy to foretell plot and disappointing conclusion.  The novel had its “deep” moments, but it should have had more “deep” moments considering the emotional and delicate topic. There was an abundance amount of potential aptitude for this novel to be momentous and memorable that the author did not take advantage of. I was hoping this book was going to be one that would become dear to my heart, but it simply was not.
