 Excerpt:
I feel Colt laugh, and he looks down into my face. That’s when he seems to realize what I’ve been acutely aware of for the last several minutes—our bodies are pressed together. “It’s awesome, yeah?” he says. “Adrenaline rush.” “Yeah,” I breathe. “I guess.” I’m not sure if he’s going to kiss me until he does. His mouth covers mine, and energy mixes with the alcohol flooding my body. Our tongues slide together, and I grip his shirt so I don’t collapse.  Every single bit of this is wrong, and there’s no way I’m stopping it. It’s back, that good feeling. The sadness has been pushed out again, and in its place is this rush, this rush of adrenaline like Colt said.  He pulls back and smiles at me. “We’re going to start dating. Now. You’re my partner in crime.”

Robie is an experienced traveler. She's taken the flight from Honolulu to the Midway Atoll, a group of Pacific islands where her parents live, many times. When she has to get to Midway in a hurry after a visit with her aunt in Hawaii, she gets on the next cargo flight at the last minute. She knows the pilot, but on this flight, there's a new co-pilot named Max. All systems are go until a storm hits during the flight. The only passenger, Robie doesn't panic until the engine suddenly cuts out and Max shouts at her to put on a life jacket. They are over miles of Pacific Ocean. She sees Max struggle with a raft.
And then...she's in the water. Fighting for her life. Max pulls her onto the raft, and that's when the real terror begins. They have no water. Their only food is bag of Skittle. There are sharks. There is an island. But there's no sign of help on the way.

Can I just start off that I read this book in the most horrible/awkward of times? I was on my way to NYC for the holidays and I decided to take a book with me; a book that if I needed to stop reading for whatever reason, I wouldn't die because of a cliffhanger. However, I forgot about the part where there is a plane crash and Robie (the MC) is in the middle of the Pacific Ocean on a raft. AND I read the plane crash of the book while *on* a plane. Talk about horrible timing.

There's not much to say about this story except that Robie is a survivor. She could have gone crazy and given up but whenever she felt like doing just that, she tapped into some deep and primal part of her that didn't allow her. She kept fighting for herself even when she wanted to give up. There a little surprise twist to the story that I enjoyed. I had picked up on some clues but I tried to keep faith right along with Robie.

Overall, it was a quick and enjoyable read but nothing too memorable. I won't be picking up this book again. And I also want to thank the girls over at ARCycling for a copy of this ARC.

Summary:
The entire village knows Neima’s grandfather is a madman.  For years the old man has prophesied that a great flood is coming, a flood disastrous enough to blot out the entire earth.  He’s even built an enormous ark that he claims will allow his family to survive the deluge.  But no one believes the ravings of a lunatic…

…until the rain starts.  And doesn’t stop.

Soon sixteen-year-old Neima finds her entire world transformed, her life and those of the people she loves in peril.  Trapped on the ark with her grandfather Noah, the rest of her family, and a noisy, filthy, and hungry assortment of wild animals, will Neima find a way to survive?

With lions, tigers, and bears oh my, elephants and flamingos too, along with rivalries and betrayals, a mysterious stowaway, and perhaps even an unexpected romance, Forty Days is not your grandfather’s Noah’s Ark story.

Forty Days is approximately 45000 words, the length of a shorter novel, and is the first installment in a two-part epic story.  It does contain a cliffhanger ending.Readers looking for a traditional, religiously oriented version of the Noah’s Ark story should be warned that Forty Days may not appeal to them.  The novel will, however, appeal to lovers of apocalyptic fiction, historical fiction, and romance, as well as anyone who’s ever dreamed of having a baby elephant as a pet.

Excerpt:

Mouths are moving, people must be screaming, the trembling goats beside me must be squealing, but the only sounds left in the world are the crash of water and wind and the boom of thunder.  I urge the goats forward, but as soon as they find their footing they slip again, and I do as well.  It takes all my attention just to make some slow progress toward the ark, dragging the goats behind me, and I have to narrow my eyes against the increasingly sharp barbs of the raindrops.  So I don’t even try to see what’s going on with my father and Noah, Munzir and the ruined fire.  And I don’t see the shape approaching me as I stumble onward, till I’m only a few steps from the ark’s open doors—
—and a cold, wet hand grabs my arm.
It’s Jorin, his eyes wide and his lips moving furiously, though I can’t make out a single word.  I try to pull away from him and he just comes closer, his mouth moving even faster; every minute facet of his expression beseeches me to listen, to understand.  I’m doing my best to hold on to my anger against him, but it’s slipping away, a mere gust of hot air that means nothing as the world breaks into pieces around us.  And then I no longer care what he’s saying; I only want to tell him: Go back, now, while you can still cross the river.  I hope your home is strong.  Stay safe.
I must be speaking aloud, for Jorin’s lips have stopped moving and he’s leaning even closer, as though he can pluck my words out of the wind.  Then a hand grabs my other arm—Father.  He takes the goats’ tethers from me and pulls me away from Jorin, into the ark.  And I let him.

For the Love of Swoon Hop

Feb. 14th - Feb. 20th

Who needs a real Valentine when there are so many charming fictional swoonalicious dudes heroes to sweep you off your feet?

We want the book that brings all the swoons - the one that makes your heart flutter or race and your stomach fill with butterflies - whether that be because of a hero/heroine, a relationship, and/or the book in its entirety.

Swooners! As you can see, this blog is called Books and Swoons and I'm participating a hop that is aptly named, no? But my GOD was it hard in choosing a book that brought all the swoons. THERE ARE SO MANY TO CHOOSE FROM. So I decided to go back to the beginning. Go back to what got me into reading again and that would be Etienne St. Clair from Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins.

For those who haven't met Etienne St. Clair allow me to introduce you:

"French name, English accent, American school. Anna confused."

His eyes lock on mine."Anna, I promised that I will never leave you." My heart pounds in response. And Etienne knows it, because he takes my hand and holds against his chest, to show me how hard his heart is pounding too.
We are kissing like crazy. Like out lives depend on it. His tongue slips inside my mouth, gently but demanding, and it's nothing like I've ever experienced, and I suddenly understand why people describe kissing as melting because every square inch of my body dissolves into his. My fingers grip his hair, pulling him closer. My veins throb and my heart explodes. I have never wanted anyone like this before. Ever.
Anna and the French KissHe pushes me backward and we're lying down, making out in front of the children with their red balloons and the old men with their chess sets and the tourists with their laminated maps and I don't care about any of that. All I want is Etienne. The weight of his body on top of mine is extraordinary. I feel him - all of him - pressed against me, and I inhale his shaving cream, his shampoo, and the extra scent that's just...him. The most delicious smell I could ever imagine.
I want to breathe him, lick him, eat him, drink him. His lips taste like honey. His face has the slightest bit of stubble and it rubs my skin but I don't care, I don't care at all. He feels wonderful. His hands are everywhere, and it doesn't matter that his mouth is already on top of mine, I want him closer closer closer.

"You're the most incredible girl I've ever known. You're gorgeous and smart, and you make me laugh like no one else can. And I can talk to you. And I know after all this I don't deserve you, but what I'm trying to say is that I loved you.

Sigh...

The winner will get a paperback copy of Anna and the French Kiss.
a Rafflecopter giveaway

Now that's not all. Since this is a blog hop, you can go check out all the other blog participating and see what swoonalicious heros has every blogger swooning! Good luck!

My Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Summary: An ambitious intern. A perfectionist executive. And a whole lot of name calling. Discover the story that garnered more than two million reads online.
Whip -smart, hardworking, and on her way to an MBA, Chloe Mills has only one problem: her boss, Bennett Ryan. He's exacting, blunt, inconsiderate - and completely irresistible. A Beautiful Bastard.
Bennett has returned to Chicago from France to take a vital role in his family's massive media business. He never expected that the assistant who'd been helping him from abroad was the gorgeous, innocently provocative - completely infuriating - creature he now has to see everyday. Despite the rumors, he's never been one for a workplace hookup. But Chloe's so tempting he's willing to bend the rules - or outright smash them - if it means he can have her. All over the office.
As their appetites for one another increase to a breaking point, Bennett and Chloe must decide exactly what they're willing to lose in order to win each other. Originally only available online as The Office by tby789 - and garnering over two million reads on fanfiction sites - Beautiful Bastard has been extensively updated for re-release.

I originally read this as a fanfiction but once I heard that it was being reworked and traditionally published, I was super excited. I was a big fan of The Office and after following Lauren and Christina for years and reading their previous works, I knew there there would be good, fun, smutty words coming my way.

Beautiful Bastard starts off with a bang, *ahem* literally. And while I managed to read it pretty quickly (in less than a day and while at work) I can't help but feel like something was missing from the story. I never really felt any sort of connection with Chloe or Bennett, which cause me to be sort of aloof/indifferent about them.

What I love about the story is that Chloe is a smart, strong, kick ass woman. She takes no prisoners and when Bennett was being an asshole to her, she still kept her cool and had her sass and witty retorts to hold her own. Chloe doesn't depend on anyone which is a quality I wish more female character have.

While I did enjoy the storyline and all the smexy times (I can't believer I'm saying this), I think there was too much smut and not enough character development. Chloe and Bennett start off hating each other and then to fucking each other and then to proceed to...fall in love? No. It happened a little too fast for me to consider it believable. If we were given more moments where Chloe and Bennett talked and connected (in a nonsexual way) I would have enjoyed it and loved them more.

To end, I enjoyed Beautiful Bastard and it was exactly what I needed when I was going through a Young Adult reading binge. There is very little angst and when there is, it is resolved pretty quickly. The changes Lauren and Christina did were noticeable but still reminded be of The Office. It did however, got me excited to read more of their works. I can't wait for the companion Beautiful Stranger.

Hi Swooners!

I have been busy getting ready for this Saturday and the baby shower that I'm hosting but I've also been busy reading Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi. Now, if you've been following along this blog and on Twitter, you know that I just love this series and I think Tahereh just have a wonderful way of writing and that I would read her grocery list just to get more of her words. So, with that, I want to say that I'm still reading Unravel Me and that I'm just going absolutely crazy loving this book. And I wanted to share just a little bit of the swoons that I've been reading; this book has me swooning like a loon. Here we go:

Unravel Me (Shatter Me, #2)

"He tortures me sometimes, smiling as he takes too long to bridge the gap between us, reveling in the sound of my heart slamming against my chest, in the sharp breaths I fight so hard to control, in the way I swallow a hundred times just before he moves to kiss me. I can't even look at him without reliving every moment we've had together, every memory of his lips, his touch, his scent, his skin. It's too much for me, too much, so much, so new, so many exquisite sensations I've never known, never felt, never even had access to before."
~~
"I catch him looking at me, looking like he might inhale the length of me in one breath."

Now, this is just Juliette talking about Adam but I'll be doing some swoons from Warner as well. But that will be next week, after I've had some time to process everything and be able to catch my breath.

What are you swooning?
