Waiting on Wednesday (#128)

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spinethat spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Morning swooners!

This week pre-publication "can't wait to read" selection is:

Expected Release Date: October 6, 2015
Synopsis:
Simon Snow is the worst Chosen One who’s ever been chosen.

That’s what his roommate, Baz, says. And Baz might be evil and a vampire and a complete git, but he’s probably right.

Half the time, Simon can’t even make his wand work, and the other half, he sets something on fire. His mentor’s avoiding him, his girlfriend broke up with him, and there’s a magic-eating monster running around wearing Simon’s face. Baz would be having a field day with all this, if he were here—it’s their last year at the Watford School of Magicks, and Simon’s infuriating nemesis didn’t even bother to show up.

Carry On is a ghost story, a love story, and a mystery. It has just as much kissing and talking as you'd expect from a Rainbow Rowell story — but far, far more monsters.
It Rainbow Rowell. That is really all I need to know so I can pick up this book. She is always such a sweetheart and her books and words are always a treat to read.

What are you "Waiting on?"

Review by: Jenn and Nahomi
It's springtime at St. Vladimir's Academy, and Rose Hathaway is this close to graduation. Since making her first Strigoi kills, Rose hasn't been feeling quite right. She's having dark thoughts, behaving erratically, and worst of all...might be seeing ghosts.
As Rose questions her sanity, new complications arise. Lissa has begun experimenting with her magic once more, their enemy Victor Dashkov might be set free, and Rose's forbidden relationship with Dimitri is starting to heat up again. But when a deadly threat no one saw coming changes their entire world, Rose must put her own life on the line--and choose between the two people she loves most.

Jenn:
My heart you guys! This book further cemented my love for this series and for everyone in the book. Richelle Mead managed to kill me with the ending of this book and I am completely at her mercy. Shadow Kiss is one of my favorite books of the series and I loved every moment of it. Rose is still one of my favorite heroines and I definitely saw character growth in this book. The way she handled herself during the battle and how her acceptance of Christian and his relationship with Lissa finally came through. I also like how she realizing her true fate of being a guardian will entail. She has definitely grown up since Frostbite.

Rose and Lissa's friendship is still something to be envious of but I feel for both of them. Rose wants to protect Lissa but it's always at a cost to herself; Lissa just wants to do her magic like a normal Moroi but it's also at a cost to herself as well. I enjoy reading a book with such strong female friendship. I also enjoy reading a book with a hot Russian dhampir named Dimitri. Dimitri is and will always be my favorite part of this series. I just absolutely love how he just whole heartedly believes in Rose. Even when all the stacks are against her, Dimitri gives Rose the benefit of the doubt or waits until she is ready to share whatever she may know.

But seriously, my heart you guys! My heart. The ending of this book killed me and I was one hot mess when I finished this book. I remember freaking out and crying hysterically as I messaged my friends on a group chat at 3:30 in the morning so I can be comforted and have them answer my questions. I also remember starting book 4, Blood Promise, at 4 am just so could calm down enough to go to sleep. If you haven't already read this series/book, one, why are you reading this review since it for the third book and aren't you afraid of spoilers???, and two, GO READ THIS BOOK. NOW. I'll be here to provide you with hugs, snuggles, and comforting words afterwards.

Nahomi:
OH MY... This book had me on the edge of my seat the entire time! There is so much going on in this book! and it took me less than a day to finish it because it was just so good. Shadow Kiss is fast paced, and full of mystery and swoonage! Can I just say I heart Dimitri and Rose! They compliment, support and push each other. This story never gives you a break just when you think the worst has passed BAM it gets worse. Even with the heartache it is still one of my absolute favorite books of all times!

EXCERPT:
I cradled my drink as Cam sauntered back to the pool tables. My mind wasn’t made up on the whole visiting them thing yet. Maybe I would. Maybe I wouldn’t.

“Want another rum and coke?”

My lips curled up at the sound of Nick’s rich, deep voice. We’d been chatting on and off since I plopped my butt down on the stool, and he had seemed happy that I was there.

Total bonus points lottery with this guy.

“I’m good, but thanks.” The last thing I wanted to be was drunk. I smiled at him, pleased when his heavily hooded gaze dipped again. “Are you guys usually this busy on the weekend?”

I could see that small talk was something Nick excelled at, which made sense, considering his occupation. He was an equal opportunity charmer. Women flocked to him at the bar. The other bartender, the girl with the pink glasses, seemed to take it all in stride.

“Not sure if you really call this busy, but Saturdays usually bring a larger crowd.” He glanced down the bar before continuing. “So you went to school with them?” he asked, jerking his chin in the direction Cam had roamed off to.

“Yeah.” Leaning forward, I placed my elbows on the bar. “I had no idea they had connections here. Total surprise.”

“Small world,” he said, echoing my earlier thought. “But you’re not very close with them.”

It was a statement, not a question. “What makes you think that?”

“Well, if you were, I guess you’d be over there with them. Or …”

Nick was observant. “Or what?”

One side of his lips curled up as he folded his arms across his chest. The movement drew my attention. I was such a visual creature. Not that anyone would blame me right now. The black shirt he wore stretched around well-defined biceps. “Or you’d rather spend the time with me.”

The twisty motion in my belly cranked up a notch. “Am I that transparent?”

“In the best possible way.” He picked up a bottle. “I’m glad you did stop by. Every time the door opened last night, I looked up and hoped it was you.”

“Is that so?”

“I speak the truth.” His smile was lazy. “Did you finish unpacking?”

“Yep.”

“Were there any more rat bastard combinations?”

I laughed. “There were a few more.”

“Kind of mad I missed out on them.”

“There’s always later.” I toyed with my glass as I met and held his stare. “So, Nick, do you have a last name?”

“Blanco,” he replied after a brief hesitation. “Do you?”

“Keith.” I grinned as he unfolded those arms. “I have another question for you.”

Moving in, he placed his hands on the bar. “Ask away.”

“Do you have a girlfriend?” My breath caught a little when he leaned in suddenly. Our mouths were close enough that we were breathing the same tiny patch of oxygen. “Or a boyfriend?”

Nick didn’t bat an eyelash. “Nope to both. How about you?”

Bonus points explosion!

“None,” I said, welcoming the tingle that swirled down my spine as his breath warmed my lips.

He tilted his head to the side, lining up his mouth with mine with just a fraction of an inch between us. I started to feel a little flushed. “You have plans tonight, Stephanie Keith?” he asked, voice deeper and rougher.

I shook my head as my pulse tripped all over itself in a happy little dance.

Nick’s grin spread into the kind of smile I knew left a trail of women in its wake. “You do now.”

Quotes (#125)

Morning Swooners,
Life always gives us the unexpected. I know they say when life gives us lemons make lemonade but man the process of making lemons into lemonade can be frustrating. In the meantime here are some quotes to get the week started right.

“True beauty is what lies inside of us, not what the world sees. A beautiful shell that houses a vile soul becomes sullied over time. But an outer shell, imperfect as it may be, that houses a beautiful, shines with that beauty, radiating it for all who have eyes to see.”
~ Sara B. Larson, Defy

“Come in. Sit anywhere but on the bed. Don't look cute, don't get undressed, and don't touch my underwear.”
~ Christina Lauren, Dirty Rowdy Thing

“The stars could fall, the ocean could take over the land, and I wouldn’t even realize it until long after Finn slows his hips and runs his hand up my leg and along my side, until he reaches my jaw, cupping it and telling me he’s never wanted anything the way he wants me.”
~Christina Lauren, Dirty Rowdy Thing

“Money can’t buy you happiness, but happiness sure is a hell of a lot easier to find when you’re not worried about where your next meal is coming from.”
~Christina Lauren, Dirty Rowdy Thing

“Because sometimes in life, you just have to stand there and do nothing. Overwhelmed by all the versions of ourselves that exist in our minds—who we want to be, who we should be, who we’re not, and who we are—it’s a jungle that can ensnare your feet and confuse your eyes. But sometimes if you stand still, all those things will snap back into place like a rubber band. And if you can get past the sting, you can keep moving, not quite whole, but held together for the moment.”
~Cora Carmack, All Lined Up

“I know now why caring about another person is so damn scary. It’s not that they won’t care about you back, because that either happens or it doesn’t. You live with it or you do everything you can to change it. The really scary thing is the moment you realize that for the rest of your life, you’ll feel twice the pain, twice the joy, twice the fear.
Twice as helpless to control it all, too.”

~Cora Carmack, All Broke Down

“I’m figuring out what I want by trial and error, and maybe that’s not the best way, but it’s all I’ve got. All I know is that I need to be my own person, someone shaped by my desire, not fear of disappointing the people who are supposed to love me.”
~Cora Carmack, All Broke Down

I hope you have a wonderful week!

Lissa Dragomir is a Moroi princess: a mortal vampire with a rare gift for harnessing the earth's magic. She must be protected at all times from Strigoi; the fiercest vampires - the ones who never die. The powerful blend of human and vampire blood that flows through Rose Hathaway, Lissa's best friend, makes her a Dhampir. Rose is dedicated to a dangerous life of protecting Lissa from the Strigoi, who are hell-bent on making Lissa one of them.

Rose knows it is forbidden to love another guardian. Her best friend, Lissa - the last Dragomir princess - must always come first. Unfortunately, when it comes to gorgeous Dimitri Belikov, some rules are meant to be broken...

Then a strange darkness begins to grow in Rose's mind, and ghostly shadows warn of a terrible evil drawing nearer to the Academy's iron gates. The immortal undead are closing in, and they want vengeance for the lives Rose has stolen. In a heart-stopping battle to rival her worst nightmares, Rose will have to choose between life, love, and the two people who matter most... but will her choice mean that only one can survive?
This is one of my favorite books of the series! My heart... HOLY MOLY, this is an emotional roller coaster from beginning to end. It left me clutching at the broken pieces of my heart, but it was totally worth it!

About the author:

Scorpio Richelle Mead is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of urban fantasy books for both adults and teens. Before becoming a writer, she considered a few different career paths. She has a bachelor's degree in liberal arts, an MA in Comparative Religion, and a Master in Teaching degree for secondary education. In the end, she decided writing was the way for her but believes all of her education prepared her for it.

A life-long reader, Richelle has always had a particular fascination with mythology and folklore. When not writing, she enjoys bad reality TV, traveling, trying interesting cocktails, and shopping for dresses. Lots of dresses. She is a self-professed coffee addict, fights a constant (and losing) battle with procrastination, and has a passion for all things wacky and humorous.

Her adult series include The Georgina Kincaid Series, which tells the humorous and heart-breaking story of a reluctant succubus who can't touch the man she loves without dire side effects. On top of that, she must deal with Hell's middle management team and the many supernatural threats that come her way. Richelle's Dark Swan Series follows Eugenie Markham, a free-lance shaman who battles ghosts and fey that sneak into our world from the Otherworld. When an alarming prophecy suddenly makes her every Otherworldly creature's object of desire, Eugenie must dodge their advances while also fighting a dark power rising within her. Richelle's third adult series, The Age of X, takes place in a futuristic world where religion has been banned--but in which the supernatural is finding a way to come back.

Richelle's internationally acclaimed YA series, Vampire Academy, is published by Razorbill Books (Penguin). This New York Times and USA Today bestselling series has won honors from the American Library Association, made into a movie, and been translated into 30 languages. It follows the war between two races of vampires, living and undead. Rose Hathaway, a 17-year old half-vampire, is training to be a bodyguard for the living vampires and finds her life complicated by the dangers that involves, as well as an illicit romance with one of her teachers. Vampire Academy was followed by a bestselling spin-off series, Bloodlines, which follows both old and new characters from the VA world.

Mini Review: Better than Perfect by Melissa Kantor

Better than Perfect
Author: Melissa Kantor

Review by: Jenn
Juliet Newman has it all. A picture-perfect family; a handsome, loving boyfriend; and a foolproof life plan: ace her SATs, get accepted into Harvard early decision, and live happily ever after.

But when her dad moves out and her mom loses it, Juliet begins questioning the rules she’s always lived by. And to make everything even more complicated there’s Declan, the gorgeous boy who makes her feel alive and spontaneous—and who’s totally off-limits. Torn between the life she always thought she wanted and one she never knew was possible, Juliet begins to wonder: What if perfect isn't all it’s cracked up to be?

Melissa Kantor once again delivers a tale that is equal parts surprising, humorous, heartbreaking, and romantic. Powerful and honest, Juliet’s story brilliantly portrays the highs and lows of life in high school and will resonate with any reader who has experienced either.

3 stars out of 5 stars
*I received an eARC of this title from the publisher but it does not influence this review in any way.*

Having read Melissa's previous title, Maybe One Day, I was extremely excited about getting my hands on this book. To be honest, I was expecting to have my heart ripped out and have a good cry. That was not the case, however. I did still enjoy the story and it left me thinking about it for the days after I finished it.

I enjoyed seeing Juliet's growth. I'm proud of her for sticking up for what she really wanted instead of going along with something that would make her unhappy. I like how Melissa Kantor writes about teens and the angst of family, friends, and expectations.  She does such a wonderful job of making her books so realistic and relatable. Because of this, I look forward to reading more from her work.

3 stars out of 5 stars
*I received a copy of this title from the publisher but it did not influence this review in any way.*

Always Loving You was such an easy and fast read and I thoroughly enjoyed being in the Danver world again. Having met Ava in No Denying You, I was excited about getting to know her story. The story was fast pace and I never found myself bored while reading. I especially loved getting to see all the previous characters in the book. While I've only read one of the books in the series, I enjoyed getting a glimpse of the couples and how far they seem to have come.

Ava and Mac's story is sweet and protective, especially considering her history, and I like how Ava tried to expand her horizons as a way to show Mac of her feelings. But I loved how in the end she decided she needed to do it for herself and not only for Mac. It felt so empowering to read how just changing her outfit and outlook made her feel like a different person. Ava really grew as a person throughout the book and it was so awesome to see that. I also liked how Mac gave Ava the space she needed (in the end at least) to learn how to feel safe on her own. I liked how she stood up for herself and how Mac gave her that space without throwing a hissy fit. So thanks for that, Sydney Landon. Alpha males are good and all as long as they don't try to hinder personal growth.

The only thing that did bother me was during the sexy times when both Ava and Mac either "shouted," "yelled," and "exclaimed" whatever they said in the heat of the moment. I found it to be distracting. But that's just a personal preference and it just me being a picky reader.

I'm thinking of reading the previous books in the series just because I enjoyed getting a glimpse of their lives now and I wonder how they got to that point. So if you're looking for a fun, easy, but sweet read, I definitely recommend this book.

Morning lovelies!

I saw Big Hero 6 for the first time this weekend and I just loved it. Baymax is my new favorite Disney character and I want to put him in my pocket. I now understand the big hoopla with Baymax and I will probably bother my new husband with all things Baymax for the next few months. Now, onto quotes!

“Don't wait for a light to appear at the end of the tunnel, stride down there and light the bloody thing yourself.”Sara Henderson

“Make it a rule never to give a child a book you would not read yourself.”George Bernard Shaw

“Maybe some people just aren't meant to be in our lives forever. Maybe some people are just passing through. It's like some people just come through our lives to bring us something: a gift, a blessing, a lesson we need to learn. And that's why they're here. You'll have that gift forever.”Danielle Steel, The Gift

“Each day means a new twenty-four hours. Each day means everything's possible again. You live in the moment, you die in the moment, you take it all one day at a time.” - Marie Lu, Legend

“If you don't like someone's story, write your own.”Chinua Achebe

“I can't imagine a man really enjoying a book and reading it only once.”C.S. Lewis
(Welp! I guess that means it time to start rereading.)

That's it for me and quotes. I hope you all have a wonderful week!

Review: Nowhere But Here by Katie McGarry

Nowhere But Here
(Thunder Road #1)
Author: Katie McGarry
Release Date: May 26, 2015
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Source: Harlequin Teen
Review by: Jenn and Nahomi
Seventeen-year-old Emily likes her life the way it is: doting parents, good friends, good school in a safe neighborhood. Sure, she's curious about her biological father—the one who chose life in a motorcycle club, the Reign of Terror, over being a parent—but that doesn't mean she wants to be a part of his world. But when a reluctant visit turns to an extended summer vacation among relatives she never knew she had, one thing becomes clear: nothing is what it seems. Not the club, not her secret-keeping father and not Oz, a guy with suck-me-in blue eyes who can help her understand them both.

Oz wants one thing: to join the Reign of Terror. They're the good guys. They protect people. They're…family. And while Emily—the gorgeous and sheltered daughter of the club's most respected member—is in town, he's gonna prove it to her. So when her father asks him to keep her safe from a rival club with a score to settle, Oz knows it's his shot at his dream. What he doesn't count on is that Emily just might turn that dream upside down.

No one wants them to be together. But sometimes the right person is the one you least expect, and the road you fear the most is the one that leads you home.

Jenn's rating: 4.5 stars out of 5 stars
Nahomi's rating: 4.5 stars out of 5 stars
Our overall rating: 4.5 stars out of 5 stars
*We received an ARC of this title from the publisher but it did not influence this review in any way.*

Jenn:
Katie McGarry has done it again. She has managed to hook me from the first page all the way to the last. I loved getting to know Emily and Oz and being in the town of Snowflake. Like in previous McGarry's books, I became curious about her secondary characters, such as Razor, Violet, and Chevy and I hope we get to see gang all over again.

Emily and Oz come from two very different world and are on two different paths. However, they are forced to come together when Emily has an unexpected visit to her biological father's town and her life becomes endangered. Oz is then forced to look out for Emily and what follows is a summer they weren't expecting.

Nowhere But Here was such a wonderful read. I enjoyed every moment and I became invested in each and every character. Emily was an interesting character in getting to know. She leads a very sheltered life and I can see where her naïveté comes from but it was a little frustrating how she didn't understand the danger of a motorcycle club. She didn't believe that her life was in danger, which I can see her point of view, but I think her extreme disbelief of what was going on around her was a bit much. I also liked how she wasn't completely sold on being around her biological father's family and it made sense that she was hesitant about getting to know them. Her eventual relationship with Olivia was sweet and needed since Olivia was the only one, aside from Oz, that really pushed Emily to look around her and see that there is more to life than what she knows. Also, Olivia was a trip and I loved whenever there was a scene with her.

Oz was also an interesting character to get to know. He did a lot of growing up and I'm glad that he also realized that there is more to his life than the Reign of Terror. Just like he pushed Emily into giving the club a chance, Emily also pushed him to see outside the club. So I like how McGarry makes her characters see beyond themselves and strive for something better.

I can't wait to see what McGarry has in store for us next. Razor's book, Walk the Edge, certainly has me excited since he definitely intrigued me in this book. I can only imagine what his story will be like considering he did scared me half the time. So if you're a fan of Katie McGarry's Pushing the Limits series, this story is for you. AND there is a link between both series and I hope we get to see some of the Pushing Limits characters interacting with the characters of this series. So that should be exciting. I know it excites me, I'm here thinking up ways of how it can happen and OMG there's so many ways it can happen! Go read this book!

Nahomi:
Nowhere But Here has all of the element that I love in a story. The mystery, suspense, romance and danger kept me turning pages until I finished. There is so much to love about this story! McGary creates characters are fleshed out and interesting. And world and familial bond between her  these characters that had a way of sucking me into the story. The dual points of view were well written and gave me a broader picture of what was going on throughout the story.

Emily is a strong and stubborn and is determined to find out the truth about her past. I love that she eventually opens herself up to create new relationships with these strangers, that are her estranged family. The way that her relationship with Eli and Olivia developed had me all choked up. Oz is cute but a little judgmental in the beginning which was kind of a turn off to be honest. As the story progressed he grew on me. I loved the chemistry between Oz and Emily! The element of forbidden love between them made the story so much better.

Nowhere But Here is a fast paced story that is beautifully written. I can't wait to get my hands on Walk the Edge or pretty much anything else Katie McGary writes!
